"WON THE ELECTION"

M.P.'S FIRST MOTOR CAR According to Mr. W. 11. P. Barber the I ownership of a motor-car in the early days of motoring" in New Zealand was a definite asset to one seeking election to Parliament. Speaking at the Automobile Association's recent dinner in Wellington, he said he got his first car in November, 1902. It WO3 the first of three cars imported by Mr. W. McLean and there was a good deal of competition for the first one. His particular desire to have the first of these cars was because of the fact that an election was to take place. "I thought I won that election," said Mr. Barber, "but my opponents were unkind enough to say that the car won the campaign. However, I think the car did a good deal towards it. I was living at Newtown in those days and every time I took the little car out people, always rushed out to see it. There was a great deal more interest in a motor-car in those days than there is in an aeroplane today."
