BAN ON SERMONS
RECTOR'S STRIKING APPEAL LAITY'S PATIENCE NEW YORK, Aug. 10. A striking appeal for a two-year moratorium on all preaching, which, the Rev. Dr. Frederic S. Fleming, rector of New York's famous and ancient Trinity parish, makes in his annual report, published to-day, is arousing widespread interest in the United States. "Why," ho asks, "cannot a Christian be permitted to go to church to worship without always being assailed by a barrage from the pulpit? "There i.s practically no preaching worth the name to be found. Frankly, a moratorium would be a godsend, heartily hailed by the pulpit and the pew. "For the most part to-day, sermons .are religious 'pep-talks.' Truly the miracle of the church is the patience of the laity. "The idea seems to be that a place must be found for a sermon in every service. The fixity of this plan cannot but produee mechanical and conventional utterances, delivered simply because the schedule calls for it."
