BULK WHISKY SUPPLIES
POSITION IN BRITAIN EFFECT OF U.S. DEMAND The shortage in the supplies of Scotci wiiisKy at Home is liKely to lead to iiu. portant ' developments, according to iletter received by a Dunedin merchant from a large exporter, who consider* rationing may be adopted. Tue alienage is due to two chief factoid the curtailment of production from lys!> onward, and larger consumption, particularly through America's re-entry. By the end of this year it is expected that the American market will have taken 5,000,000 gallons in 12 months, and reliable judges consider the amount will rise in two years to 10,000,000 gallons.
The managing-director of a wholesale wine and spirit firm stated that in his opinion the whisky distillers of Scotland no longer wished to send bulk supplies to New Zealand because they could get much higher prices in America. There was a dearth of cheap-grade whisky since it had all been sent to America to supply a sudden and unexpected demand. One distiller had advised that the price of bulk whisky had increased by nearly LI a gallon, the intention being, it seemed to stop the demand for bulk and to sell only case whisky, lie added. In future any bulk whiskv when broken down would cost as much as bottled whisky, as it would be of a high grade. Distillers did not seem to want to make any more lower-grade spirit.
