THE NAVAL BOARD

NEW MEMBER ARRIVES CAPT. R. D. OLIVER, D.S.C The new; second naval member of the New Zealand Aaval Board, Captain R. Li. Oliver, D.S.C, arrived at Auckland by the Aorangi from Vancouver. Captain Oliver succeeds Captain L. Vaughau M-jrgan, who' will leave Auckland for Ehgiaud by. the Tamaroa on October 9. Captain Oliver has been in New Zealand oeiore, having been a lieutenant in H.xM.S. Renown on her visit to the Dominion in lakO. Joining the Navy in 1912, Captain Oliver served throughout the Great War. He was in H.M.S. Inflexible at the outbreak of war and was in her when she was the first in action at the Battle of the Falkland Islands. He was also at the landing at Gallipoh and later had three years' mine-laying experience in the North Sea. Captain Oliver did excellent work in destroyers, being mentioned four times in despatchet and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. H.M.S. Ceres, H.M.S. WarspiU and H.M.S. Hood were other ships in which he served, his iast one being ii.iU.S. Resolution.

After inspecting the Devonport Naval Base, Captain Oliver will leave for Wei lington. He is accompanied by Mrs. Oliver, who is a daughter of Mr. Jamej Huddart, founder of the Canadian-Aus-tralasian Line of steamships. Mrs. Olivei was born in Australia.
