DAIRY BOARD'S POWERS

USEFUL ADJUNCT CHAIRMAN'S VIEWS NO, 1 WARD CONFERENCE (Pur Press Association.) WHANGAR.EI, last night. At the animal conference of No. 1 ward of the Dairy Control Board held to-day, Mr. A. .1. .Murdoch, chairman of the board, presided. Mr. T. C. Brash, the secretary, was also in attendance. Mr. Murdoch said that,, as (he new department had taken over the control of the board's staff, there should be no difficulty in handling the- produce either at the New Zealand or English end. Dealing with the constitution of the board, Mr. .Murdoch gave a complete denial to the statements that the jboard was a Government department. It was consulted and hugely dominated by the Government, but it's first, job was to mako representations on behalf of the. industry.

"Many of us may not be satisfied with llio present, condition of the industry," said Mr. Murdoch, "but, whatever our personal views, the. job of the board is to give to the powers in control every opportunity to make good. .If they fail in their object, then it will be the duty of the board members to voice complaints and introduce, further ideas.

"'ft is my idea to give 100 per cent, service, and so far the board has received no complaints from the Minister, .fudging from our limited statutory powers, it does not appear that we have much work to do, but the Minister has made it clear that we arc definitely a useful adjunct to the work of the department and in a consultative capacity. Vou hang on to your board, and. if it. fails you in ally way, do not hesitate to suv so."

.Asked as to the position of local marketing, Mi'. Murdoch replied: "You know as much as we. do about the subject. -Mr, Duncan has advjsed the board to tell directors to go ahead and that nothing harsh will bo done."

A motion expressing the. opinion that there should be a. compensating price essential to meet the. rising costs accruing in the dairy industry was carried.

A motion that Is per pound superfine should be advanced uniformly was withdrawn.
