OBITUARY

MR. A. J. OIFFORD A Wellington exchange records the I death of Mr. Arthur John Gilford, late of Hamilton and formerly of Westport. Born in London on December 31, 1860, Mr. Gilford received his early education at, Somerset. College, Bath. He arrived in New Zealand with his parents in August, 1877. by the ship Lady Kuthven. Hc/Taught for short periods at the Auckland Training College, Napier Boys'High School, and the Avenue Public School, Wanganui. In 3803 he became headmaster of the Bulls School, in the Rangitikci district, which ])o:sition he, held until his appointment to charge of the secondary department of Westport District High School in 19C2. He remained there 'until his retirement from leaching on account of ill health in 1915. Having some years previously qualified as a barrister and solicitor, he took a position in 1916 with the firm of Marshall and llutton at Wanganui. and in 1917 moved to Hamilton, where he practised lor a time as a solicitor. lie relumed In Wanganui early in 19T>. His heallh sleadily failed during the past, three years. Mr. Clifford was one of I lie Dominion's leading chess players.

The death occurred in Auckland last week of Mr. Harold Bliek, for many years a resident of Wellington. Mr. Bliek was formerly an accountant in the employ of: A. S. Paterson and Company. He left that firm to go into business on 'his own account and was iii business in Wellington for many years. Mr. Bliek was a keen yachts-

Mr Pnrnell was for 11 years engaged in the Fleet Street Printing Courts. Ife married Beatrice, rider daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Huxtnble, ot Claphain Common. 111-health compelled him to leave England for a milder climate, and with his wife and young family he sailed in the Wnrrimoo on her maiden voyage to New Zealand. Mr. A. F. Hawke, :i former member of the Legislative Council, whoso death was reported from Jnvereargill on Sunday, in his seventy-fourth year, was born in .South Australia. He came to New Zealand at an early age and completed his education in Invereargill. Joining the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, in 1878, Mr. Hawke 'became manager I ot the Invereargill branch in 1890. Jle was formerly president of Lite Southland Rugby Union and the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, He was for some years Mayor of the borough of Gladstone, and also served as a member of the Invcrcargill Borough Council and the Hospital Board and the Bluff Harbour Board, being chairman of the last-named two bodies. Mr, Hawke was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1918 and retired in 1925, on the completion of his term vf seven years.
