CABLE RATES
TRANS-TASMAN SERVICE NEED FOR REDUCTION The hope, that the time was not far distant when trans-Tasman cable service rates would be reduced so that they vvonid bear a, relationship to telegraphic chaa'ges in New Zealand and Australia, and also that the radio telephonic service rates would be much on a par with those, for toll calls in. the two countries, was expressed by the Mayor of Auckland. Mr. Ernest Davis, in his address of welcome at the civic reception tendered to the Premier of New South Wales, Mr. 11. S. B. Stevens, and the Australian Minister of Defence, Sir Arclulale Pai-khil!. . In the course of his reply, Mr Archdale Parkhill said the Mayor had mentioned an important question, and the suggest ions relating to cable and radiolelcphonic charges'would be duly conveyed by the speaker to the PostmasterGeneral of the. Commonwealth. Anything that conduced to shorten, the distance and improve communications between the two conntries should be. seized upon with avidity by the slatesmen of Australia and New Zealand. Science was annihilating distance. The recent addition to the Cnion Steam Ship Company's fleet, the Awatca, was a matter for 'congratulation. Sir Are.hdnlc added that he was in New Zealand on a special mission, the discussion of a, trans-Tasman air service, and be hoped that before, long something would be accomplished as a result of the pioneering work done by many heroic Au'sfraliah and New Zealand airmen.
