GRAZIER’S WARNING
WOOD SUBSTITUTE
BRISBANE, Sept. 18,
An appeal for an amicable trade agreement with Japan before the manufacture of staple fibre as a wool substitute became dangerously widespread was made by Air. N. Cubit, a Tasmanian grazier, who arrived at Brisbane to-day in the Kamo Maru from Japan. Mr. Cubit said that the Japanese were genuinely distressed at Australia’s attitude as Japan sent to the Commonwealth more than £."> for every £1 taken out. The Federal Ministry, he said, must act carefully, or it might spoil a portion of the Australian wool industry. While Japan was trying to do without wool, it was manufacturing staple fibre to take its place. It might be that staple fibre would come to stay, and would result in permanent restriction of the demand for wool.
