TENSION QUICKENING
MANUKAU BY-ELECTION
CHEERS FOR. CANDIDATES
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. . The approacli of the Mnnukau by-elec-tion made itself felt by a quickening in tension at a meeting of the National candidate, Mr. F. W. Doidge, at Otiehunga last night. Displays of enthusiasm by supporters of either side were frequent and cheers for Mr. Doidge and his opponent were given at frequent intervals.
Prior to Mr. Doidge’s speech, addresses were given by Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, a former Cabinet Minister, and Mr. J. Hargest, M.P., for AwariiaMr. Fisher rejected the claim of the Government that it was following the ideals of the Liberal regime of the nineties. In those days, he said, taxation was one-eighth of what it was to-day. The Liberal Government took the precaution of proceeding with its great measures with reasonable speed, but admirable discretion, so that the country had time to digest them. Official reports to substantiate his statements relating to guaranteed prices, unemployment figures, and immigration were quoted last night by the Labour candidate, Mr. A. G. Osborne, who read a telegram from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. .Savage, congratulating him on the light he had' made in the campaign.
