The prophecy of a rail service from Auckland to Wellington in nine and alialf hours was made by Mr. S. 11. Mack ley, Hie general manager of railways, this morning when discussing a projected daylight railcar tourist .service.
He said that standard railcars, which could reach a speed of 70 miles an hour with absolute comfort and safety, were to be finished in the Ilutt workshops in nine months’ time, and would be utilised on the Now Zealand railways with the exception of the AVairarapa line. The workshops were now completing the fast of seven special cars for the Wairarapa line. Four of tho latter cars already had proved entirely satisfactory to the department and the travelling public.
