HOTELS OUTSIDE TOWN MAGISTRATE'S CRITICISM TANT-DRTYER FIXED (Per Press Association.) INYERCARGILL, this day. “It is not safe to drive on the north i-oad after 6 o’clock on any night, especially for cyclists. It is. my opinion that the hotels oil the outskirts of the city, where there is no license, are a menace tn human life. This, is. an outstanding example that men don t go out there io have a drink; they gn> to fill up, as it were.” This comment was made by Mr. W. 11. Free,man, S.M., during the bearing of a charge against a taxi driver, James Douglas 'Scott, who pleaded guilty to being intoxicated while in charge ot a ear. Counsel said that the accused was suffering from influenza and went to the hotel for is rum to try and shake it off. Tie had been driving for 12 years and never had an accident. The .Magistrate said that if the accused had been plying . for hire ho would have imposed imprisonment. He (inod the accused £25 and his license was cancelled to the end of the current term.
