ANSWER TO GALLAS

MANDATE NOT WANTED ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN GENEVA, Sept. 27. In order to record Britain's position regarding two petitions by Galla tribes in western Abyssinia, the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, has sent a letter to M. Avenol, the _ secretarygeneral of tho League of Nations. Mr. Eden states that certain chiefs had sought the aid of the British consul at Gore in June and July, and also the aid of the Sudan Commissioner at Gambelila, in asking the League to confer a Western Abyssinia mandate upon Britain. Britain, however, had informed the chiefs that she was not in a position to accept such a mandate. The Sultan of Gumai had also petitioned regarding alleged depredations by Amharic soldiers at Jimma. The British agent appointed at Jimma was instructed to protect foreigners. He reported on September 9 that the situation was uneasy owing to the strained relations between Amharics and Gallas, but the chiefs were protecting missionaries.
