Mr. G. It. A. Whiting, who was formerly inspector of factories in Taranaki and who, on hisl retirement, lived for some years at Gisborne, has returned to take up Ins residence in New Plymouth. Mr. C. J. Ilamblyn, fields superintendent, Department of Agriculture, who visited the Gisborne and Coast districts last week, left during the week-end on 'lis return to Palmerston North.
Cabled advice has been received from IjOiidon that Mr. Paul Falla, a son of Mr. N. S. Falla, has been successful in the Foreign Office examinations, being second on the list, and will now enter the diplomatic service.—P.A:
Professor P. W. Robertson, ,of the chair of chemistry at Victoria University College, Wellington, will leave on October 13 on a visit to Great Britain. He will read a-paper before the Chemical Society of London.
Mr. G. S. Bridge returned to Gisborne on Saturday night after a visit to Great Britain, the Continent and Denmark. He. was a member of a party of New Zealand farmers and breeders who left New Zealand some months ago.
An engagement is announced between Daniel Joseph, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Moran, of "Arawa," Kotemaori, Napier, to Mavis Lorraine, eldest daughter of Mr. H. J. Bloxham and the late Mrs. Bloxham, of 166 Whitaker street, Gisborne.
An engagement is announced between Alexander Stewart, youngest son of Mrs. M. Twaddle and of the late Mr. T. K. Twaddle, of Napier and late of Scotland, and Lillian. Ellen, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hitchcock, of Te Araroa.
Queen Salote Tubou, Queen of Tonga, and Prince Tugi, Prince Consort and Prime Minister, arrived at Auckland to-day by the Awatea from Sydney. They have been in Australia for the purpose of visiting Crown Prince Tauf'a'ahau, who is a student at Newinglon College, Sydney, and they will make a stay of about three weeks in New Zealand, leaving by the M'atua, which is due to sail from Auckland for the Islands on October 22. The Queen is accompanied by two ladies-in-waiting.
On Saturday afternoon Ml". A. IT. Wright, lion.' secretary 'of the Poverty Bay' Rugby Referees' Association, was made the recipient of a presentation, in the form of a case of pipes, from his fel-low-members of that body. Mr. L. It. Stichbury, vice-chairman of the association, made (he presentation in the absence of Mi-. K. R. Waite, who was engaged in controlling the championship final. Mr. Wright has been two years in the post of hoii. secretary, which he is resigning on account of his transfer to Hawkc's Bay. His services wore. eulogised by Mr. Stichbury and others among his colleagues, who expressed their regret at his impending departure from the district, and wished liim every success in his new sphere.
