DIPHTHERIA INOCULATION
FURTHER STEPS TAKEN WAIROA AND GISEORNE A further series of inoculations against diphtheria is being planned for the Wairoa and Gisborne districts by the district medical officer of health, Dr. Ellen lleycock. Large numbers of children were inoculated five- years ago, and a sufficiently large number was done to secure a satisfactory immunisation against an epidemic. Speaking to a reporter to-day, Dr. Heyeoek stated that the most important age for inoculation was between the years of one and five, and injections "given then, three at three-weekly intervals, would give immunity from diphtheria for life. Dr. Ileycock is at present making preparations for inoculations .igainst diphtheria in Wairo-i at an early date, and the Gisborne area will be attended to later.
Writing to the Herald on the matter, a Wairoa correspondent states that some parents have been debating the advisability of having their children inoculated, and adds: "Parents should .recall the fact that smallpox has practically been wiped out, mainly through inoculation, and typhoid has been almost conquered, while anti-diphtheritic inoculation may be expected to have a like effect.
