MATUA'S MISHAP

RUDDER NEARLY ALL OFF PROPELLERS DAMAGED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. When the Union Steam Ship company's Island steamer Matua was docked to-day it was revealed that, practically the 'whole of the rudder had been smashed off and that both propellers were so damaged that I hey will have to be replaced'. The fact that Captain I'rosscr and the crew were able to bring the vessel from Rarotonga, alter striking the reef, at an average speed of nine knots is a tribute to their magnificent seamanship. The damage has not yet been officially surveyed an'd it is impossible to state how long the vessel will be docked.
