TO-BAY'S HOCKEY

WAIROA TEAMS DEFAULT Y.M.C.A. PLAY CALEDONIAN The hockey season in Gisbome closed to-day, when a ladies' team from Napier appeared on the Childers Road Reserve. Two Wairoa club teams, a men's side from Frasertown and a ladies' team, were also to have played Gisborne teams, but. neither .arrived. In place of their match against Frasertown, Caledonian arranged to play Y.M.C.A., and although Y.M.C.A. had to rely on some of their younger players on short notice, the strong Caledonian team was fully extended to win by two goals to nil. Caledonian scored towards the. end of the first half, as a result of a shot from the corner by Slade, while the second goal was the result of last following up by .1. Harrison.

SOCIAL MATCH FIREMEN V. REFEREES TO-DAY'S EARLY CAME If ever the Gishorne Fire Brigade wished for the assistance of a good strong wind it was when the Rugby team met the Poverty Hay Referees' Association's representatives in a social Rugby match which figured as the cur-tain-raiser for to-day's senior championship 'final at the. Oval. On the other hand, the referees must have envied Mr. Tom French, who held the whistle and was aide to find a. sound! reason for pulling up the play at any time convenient to himself, hut not necessarily convenient to the players. The game, a* a matter of fact, was marked by a comparative absence of whistling, and players on both 'sides probably would have welcomed more frequent stoppages. A huge number of the players were young and active footballers and the distinction between these and the veterans in both teams was clearly marked. Play was fairly even throughout the two short halves in which the match was played, the referees' team leading at half-time by six points to three. The score was evened up shortly after the interval. Efforts by leading players of each side to achieve penalty goals or conversions were handicapped'by repeated rushes on the part of the defenders, and other features of social Rugby were noted by the spectators with a good deal of appreciation, the game as a whole giving much entertainment to the crowd and to plavers. The final score was 11-all. For tiie referees A. Ingram scored a penalty goal. Carroll a try, and F. 0. Bennett a fry. which he himself converted. Three tries for the brigade were scored by Oaie, 11. Sebiro effecting the nrie conversion. The match concluded with the usual salute to the referee. TRAVELLED BY PLANE MARLBOROUGH TEAM (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Marlborough Rugby football team kept their Wellington appointment by coining over by a chartered plane, throe trips being made to land the team here.
