MR. HEENEY'S FUNERAL

A LONG CORTEGE WIDESPREAD SYMPATHY The funeral of Mr. Hugh Heeney, held this afternoon, was largely attended, those present including A big proportion of representatives of 'sporting organisations with which his sons commenced their championship careers. Yesterday and to-day large numbers of telegrams of sympathy were received from many parts of New Zealand, and as far south as Ashbttrton, the town in which the late Mr. Heeney first lived on coming to New Zealand "57 years ago. Many floral emblems were carried to the Taruheru cemetery, where the interment was held.

Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church at 6.30 a.m. to-day, and prior to the funeral leaving the church a short service was conducted by the Rev. Father McMahon, who also read the burial service. Members of the Turanganui Lodge, of the Druidic Order attended, and gathered at the graveside. The lodge also supplied four of the pallbearers, Bros. T. G. Lawless, F. Williams, C. Gallagher and A. Craill, while the other two pallbearers were grandsons of Iho late Mr. Heeney, Messrs. D'Arcy Heeney and M. J. Griff en. The cortege included over 30 motor cars. In addition to members of the family mentioned in yesterday's Herald, Mr., Pat Heeney, Hastings, and Mrs Hamlin, Napier, are. brother and sister respectively of the late. Mr. Hugh Heeney.
