SMALL SCOW FOUNDERS
INEXPLICABLE MISHAP
FILLED WITH WATER
CREW ESCAPES IN DINGHY
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Word has been received that a small scow, the Tamahae, inward bound from Mangawai to Auekland, foundered in the Hauraki Gulf off Brown's Bay, shortly after midnight.
The. crew of three. Captain R. H. Jones, the engineer-male, Mr. P. Griffey, and the deck hand, Mr. 11. Collins, took to a dinghy and rowed to Brown's Bay, about two miles away.
The captain said the weather was finei and the vessel was under power with a staysail sel. The engineer found water making- rapidly in the engine-room, and wan just, in lime to get. the dinghy out, before the vessel foundered. The Tamahae is of 20 tons' gross, and has been engaged in the coastal shingle trade. Formerly she was in the coal trade between Mokau and Wailara.
The captain said the foundering was inexplicable, as the vessel laid not. shown any signs of a leak. The scow, which formerly was the Glenae, "was owned by Captain Jones, and is valued at £ISOO. The owner states only a small portion of this is covered bv insuran.ee.
