A Geneva message says that a, packed Assembly heard the leader of the British delegation, Mr. Anthony Eden', open the general debate of the Assembly of file League of Nations. - ■ Mr. Eden began with a statement that Britain did not want to see tire nations divided into two camps, in which different forms of Government were challenging each other. . Nationally. -controlled propaganda and controlled criticism had stifled thought. There had been'a general weakening of confidence., ~~B*ritain should not allow anyone to wrest her democracy from her.
He added that there must be toleration and international order. Two essential elements were the League machinry and the will to work it. The recent failure of the collective security action was due to lack of more energetic and more effective League intervention in the early stages of the crisis.
Mr. Eden said that the members.'ofihe » Council should early show how far they were prepared to intervene in the cause of peace. It would be a powerful,deterrent when military preparations "Were afoot. Regional pacts could-be devised to strengthen the covenant.
