RIVAL TO HOLLYWOOD

ROME'S £2,000,000 PLAN

MUSSOLINI'S SUPPORT

LONDON, Sept. 1

A £2,000,000 plan to make Rome the greatest film centre of Europe is to receive the support and co-operation of Signor Mussolini. The new studios are to be situated on a 105-acre site, not far fronv the centre of the city. Walter Wanger, the famous Hollywood producer, is already scheduled to make a picture there next year. Hollywood stars and technicians will be imported, and the names of Sylvia Sidney and Henry Fonda have been mentioned as co-stars in the first picture, to be made next summer.

Mr. Wanger states that Italy, for climatic and scenic reasons, is the best locale for colour photography in Europe. "Mussolini," he says, "has promised unlimited co-operation. He intends to produce films that are worthy of worldwide showing, and with special appeal to English-speaking audiences. "That he is serious in his purpose is shown very, clearly in two ways. lie is now working on a plan to exempt from the Italian income-lax all film peisonalities imported from other countries, while the Government has already started work on the new £2,C00,000 studio."
