CHANCES IN AUSTRALIA SUPERIORITY IN BOWLING LONDON, Sept. 11. The well-known cricket writer Mr. Neville Cardus, who will sail with the Marylebone team to Australia, stated to-day that the all-round strength o' the .Englishmen had been radically improved by the return to form of Ames. "The fact that Ames is a capable wieketkeeper," said Mr. Cardus, '"and can go in seventh man with potentialities toward a century, will enable Allen to play two of his three professional fast bowlers, not one of whom is a star hatsman.
"Had Duckworth, Verity and one of the fast bowlers been in the same team there would have been a tail, although I do not want to be unjust to Verity, who is a luseful batsman without possessing strokes.
"Ames hag simplified the problem. Duckworth is «ie finer wieketkeeper when the wicket is sticky and the ball is playing tricks, but on the perfect wicket's in Australia, where the ball comes straight through, it is not necessary to have exceptional agility behind the stumps.
"Besides, if Bradman is in form the wieketkeeper may not have much to do. England's major problem will be to make, as many runs as possible. "The barracking decision, is a generous response to the Marylebone Cricket. Club," added Mr. Cardus, "but it would be a pity if cheery comment from the crowd was suppressed. Australians need not doubt that Englishmen are well aware that the loss of that spice would rob the test matches of much exhilaration."
