WAERENGA-A-HIKA NEWS

CARD TOURNAMENT (Herald Correspondent.) On Thursday evening the- fourth 'annual five-hundred tournament between Makaraka and Waerenga-a-hika residents was held at the Waereng-a-bika. College. This event is eagerly anticipated each year as the final of the card season and causes keen competition; between the ,t\vo districts, the winners holding a miniature cup. Card tables were arranged in a large classroom, 15 tables being occupied. The games were ably controlled by. Mr. Miudlenuss, Mr. I." Eade and the Rev. .W. S. C. .Stephens. Play was very keen, four players tying for each, prize. The winners were:—Ladies.— Mrs. Lee, 1. Miss Barber was awarded a prize. Gentlemen.—-Mr. I. Barboure, 1. Mr. J. Smith was given another prize. Points for the cup were awarded, Waerenga-a-hika again emerging the winners, with a score of 146. against Makaraka's 114. The Rev. W. S. C. : Stephens presented the'prizes and thanked all .for their patronage. As the cup was again won by the-local residents. -Mr. Stephens expressed a wish that it should be held by one of the nlavers instead of being kept at '"Hie Vicarage." He then asked .Mrs. Barber, sen., a very popular old resident, to accept ""the cup on behalf of Waerenga-a-hika. Mr. L. Eade expressed thanks on behalf of the visiting players and hoped Waerenga-a-hika would again visit Makaraka next season. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr.- Laseron for the use of the room. Mr. Middlemiss responded for Waerenga-a-hika A daintv supper was served informally by the ladies of the parish. Those present included Mesdames J. 13 Greig, A. Barrow, R. Cram, W. Tome, 1 A. Paulson.
