RETURN OF COLONIES

CLAIM BY GERMANY DISCUSSION PLANNED BRITISH CABINET MEETING LONDON, Sept. 11. Herr Hitler’s claim for the return to Germany of her pre-war colonies will soon be discussed by the British' Cabinet foreign affairs committee. Later it, will be considered by the full Cabinet. It is also expected that there will be a full-dress discussion at the Conservative Party’s annual conference at Margate in October. Hitherto, a number of Ministers, it is understood, have favoured the leopening of the German colonial question as part of a general European settlement. During the last few months, however, Government opinion is staled to have changed. Most Ministers, it, is now said, realise that the House of Commons by a big majority would, reject a, proposal for Nazi rule of the present mandates. The political correspondent, of the News-Chronicle states: “The main reasons for the- hardening of opinion are the recent- extension of Fascist influence in Africa as a result of the Abyssinian conquest, the continued speeding-up of Fascist, rearmament, and Fascist, assistance to the rebels in Spain. As, long a a Fascist-nations demonstrate expansionism by these methods, members of the House of Commons will resist the- pressure for expansion in the colonial field.” • Reports from Capetown state that South Africa is greatly alarmed at Die turn of events in Nuremberg. Hie Cape Times points out that, every member of the Union Government, in, the past few years has clearly stated that South Africa cannot consider cession of southwest Africa or Tanganyika, and says: ‘‘lt, is difficult to imagine, even, on the widest grounds, of world policy, how the South African view can be overridden.’ Tho Italian newspapers : give almost as much prominence to tho British reaction to Herr Hitler’s speech to the Nazi congress regarding the claim for colonies as to the speech itself. The London correspondent of Lavoro Fascista says: “London went to bed last night in a bad temper,. and woke up with a nasty taste in its mouth. Herr Hitler’s reasons for demanding the return of the former German colonies are so similar to the Italian arguments in support of the conquest of Abyssinia that replies in the British press are reported satirically.” Addressing the Nazi Congress at, Nuremberg, Herr Hitler that oeniiaiij could mot renounce her claim for the settlement of her colonial demands.
