COUNTY PLANTATIONS
WORK ON NEW AREA GENTLE ANNIE CUTTING A report. on the progress of Lee plantations nailer the control of the Cook County Council was submitted at yesterday’s council meeting by the engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, who stated: —
“So far very little lias been done in the way of development on the Waterfall Hill plantation, 'but the plans are practically completed in connection with the consolidation of this area, and it is intended to interview owners concerned, at an early date. A fence hits been erected around the planting being carried out. by the councillors on Arbour Day. Cr. M. T. B. Hall has given a number of suitable native'trees for planting in this area, and the work of planting them is now proceeding. “On the Gentle Annie plantation, the trees which were shading tHe road have been cut away, and a good proportion of timber is being utilised by the Railway Department in connection with their work. About 20 cords of firewook is also available, and it is intended to dispose of this shortly.
“The bitumen surface on Gentle Annie has improved considerably as a result of the removal of these trees. It is probable that the fence will, be re-erected on the edge of the road formation and also act as a guide to traffic. A small area which had remained implanted on Gentle Annie was planted during the month, but the young trees do not appear to be making very satisfactory progress, and it is probable that the cold snap experienced has had a detrimental effect upon them.”
