EARLY SETTLERS

GISBORNE ASSOCIATION j RULES ADOPTED After a long discussion on rules for the guidance of members, a set was adopted by the committee of tho Poverty Bay Early Settlers’ Association, -which jnet on Saturday evening at:the office of.the secretary. Mr. L #Lawless. The balance sheet, tvluoli =kowed a. credit balance of £9, was considered highly satisfactory in view 'of the fact that the annual subscription was only 2s 6d.

A, The president, Mr. W. Hay, read an extract from a letter which had been received from their Matawai representative, Mrs. A. E. Gibson, who stated that while in Dunedin she visited the Early Settlers’ Museum and was interested in the many relics ot< the past that- had been collected bv the Dunedin association. Their subscription was os a year and they had a- social hall in a separate building. ■'-Mrs. Gibson thought that Hie early settlors of Poverty Bay should strive to .’build a hall in which to house links with the past before the centenary of the Dominion in 19-10, and she offered to donate a piano, which had been ■bought by her father many years ago, as'a statt.

. When ho had read the extract, Mr. Hay said that very few people seemed to realise the aims and objects of the Earlv Settlers’ Association, and pointed out that the Otago association’s membership was over 3000. The rules that, had been adopted followed closely those of the southern association arid the objects of the two organisations were the same.

Mr. Hay announced that it was the intention of the committee to hold a pienic. towards the end of November, and he asked members of the executive to- enroll as many members as possible before that function.

■' Early settlers who arrived in Poverty Bay before 1894 and their descendants over 21 years of age and any residents .who have been in Gisborne over 40 years are eligible for membership in the association.
