Miss Elsie Thomas, Napier, is visiting Gisborne.
Mr. J. C. Field returned to Gisborne last night from a visit to Wellington. Mr. E- D. Mosley, senior stipendiary magistrate in Wellington, will leave Wellington by the Marama on September 4 on a visit to Australia.
Mr. E. P. Kerry, Sydney, has been appointed adjudicator for the New Zealand brass band championship contest to be held in Nelson from February 15 to 20 next.
Miss E. Roach, supervisor of the telephone exchange at Wanganui, has received a similar appointment to Gisborne. Miss L. Hogan, supervisor at Gisborne, has been appointed to Auckland.
The- -Hon. Sir Charles Statham, former Speaker of the House of Representa-. Lives, will henceforth retain the title “Honourable,” an announcement to that effect appearing in the current issue of the Gazette.
Messrs. Lawrence L. Hunt and Pat Tipping, who left New Zealand a year ago, and since then have beeii ill training with the Royal Air Force at Grantham, have been ordered to proceed to Basra, ill the Persian Gulf. The Rev. H. K. Archdall, formerly headmaster of King’s College, Auckland, and officiating chaplain of Wellington College, Berkshire, England, has been appointed chaplain to Wellington College. Guests at- the Masonic Hotel recently include Mr. M. R. Fitzgerald, Gisborne; .Messrs. P. 11. Pithie, J. Gluaine, L. W, Tonkin, F. Whitehead, E. G. Chandler, C. A. Low, and W. L. Moore, Auckland ; Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Piper, Messrs. 11. Miller and H. C. Murray. Mr. S. Jervis, Lower Hutt, has arrived in Gisborne to replace Mr. L. N. Harris as deputy-district Public Trustee. In the course of his service with the Public Trust Mr. Jervis has been, attached to the Napier and Wairoa branches, while for the past seven years he has been in tlie Wellington office. Mr. Harris expects to leave for Auckland towards the end of next week.
Mr. J. A. Horne, who has been Gisborne manager of Messrs. Woohvorths (N.Z.), Limited, since the establishment of the business here, has received advice of liis appointment as managei of the Willis street branch in Wellington. Mr. J. Faulls, at present with the Auckland branch, comes to Gisborne. Mr. llorne will leave Gisborne about the middle of next month. Air. J. V. Sherborne, senior telegraphist at the Hastings Post Office, has received notification of his transfer on promotion to the position of postmaster at Te Araroa. He will take up this position early in October. Mr, A. O. Martin, formerly of Te Araroa, has taken charge of the Port Ahuriri Post Office. Mr. D. H. Dunn is at present acting-postmaster at Te Araroa.
The staff of Messrs Ball and Crnwsliaw met yesterday afternoon to farewell one of their number, bliss F. Johnstone, who left the firm to-day after four years’ service and starts on Monday in the Gisborne branch of the Public Trust office. On behalf of the other members of the staff, bliss E. Cox presented bliss Johnstone with a manicure set, remarking on the pleasure it had always been to work with her, Other members of the staff also spoke, and bliss Johnstone briefly replied.
