AUSTRALIAN ATTITUDE
SUBSIDY FAVOURED
CANBERRA, Aug. 20,
One of the first matters to he considered bv the Federal Cabinet after the return to Australia of the Minister of Commerce, Dr. Earle Page, will bo the proposed combined action by the Governments of Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji to meet, the competition of subsidised American shipping in the Pacific with British lines. . (The problem was discussed by Dr. Page And - the Attorney-General, Mr. Menzies, withtthe British authonties, arid a* report on those discussions will be presented to the Cabinet. It is expected that there "will be a recommendation to the Cabinet that the Commonwealth should participate in a subsidy system so that modern British vessels Will be enabled to compete with the American lines. Proposals considered in London recently, it is believed, Envisaged the construction o' four modern vessels and the standardisation of Pacific shipping in two categories. one of passenger liners, with refrigeration space, and the other of cargo vessels of a speed of 1 / knots.
