Some of the whales came close to his boat, and fearing that one of them might, rise under it. he frightened them away bv firing several shots from a rifle. When off Bellringer Head he witnessed a terrific struggle within £oyds. of his boat between an 80ft. whale and several thresher sharks and swordfish. The water was red with blood from the whale, which bellowed like a bull. At times it jumped almost out of the water, showing huge gashes in its.sides.
