POSITION OP FARMERS
UNION PRESIDENT'S VIEW
The position of farmers is viewed optimistically by Mr. J. E. Benson, Poverty Bay provincial president of the Farmers' Union, in the report submitted to the annual meeting held in Le Grand cafe this afternoon. "Conditions generally,'' he said, "are showing a decided improvement. Wool was quite a good price last season; likewise meat, butter and cheese, and if we could only reckon on the same prices for a few years, slump conditions, as far as the" farmers are concerned, would be a thing of the past.
"The Rural Mortgagors' Relief Act has become law, and has been taken advantage of by many hundreds of farmers who felt that,,if given time, they could meet their obligations', much of which had been accumulated during tho depression. So far as I can hear, the system is spoken of very favourably by those who arc now working under the 'stay order' system.
"It is pleasing to note that work on tho East Coast railway has again beou taken up, and we all sincerely hope that in due course it will become an accomplished fact. This will mean a considerable advance in our progress, and put this district on a more equal footing with Hawke's Bay and other centres.
