CLYDEBANK SETTLEMENT
SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY REQUEST TO POWER HOARD (Herald Correspondent.j Settlers of the. Clydebank spec!. 11 settlement, who recently asked the Wairoa Power Board to supply th< »\ with electric current, consider that th ■> have a, good claim for consideration. During the past year the Wairoa Power Board spent only £lls 9s lOd in extensions, the balance of loan expenditure being made up with £BO for time switches and £2B lor house services:
Discussing the position, the chairman of the board, Air. C. V. Chamberlain pointed out that the way had been prepared for greater progress. A few year;; ago the board .had a debt of £17,000. but that had been materially reduced. The sparseness of settlement precluded the erection of any more uneconomic transmission lines, of which there were too many already. Clydebank settlers, who live only a few miles from Wairoa, claim that if they arc linked up with the Power Board's system they will provide a good load, and the settlement will be enhanced. A liability of £2OOO, they state. is too much to ask them to carry. One suggestion is that it is a ease for Government aid as one of the Ministers ha:; announced his intention to see that the backblocks are. better served with electric power. The chairman of the. board admitted that, the 23 settlers on this block tiesired to be supplied with the power available at Wairoa.'s back door from one of the most, economical sources of electric power in the Dominion.
