The first round in the afternoon men's competition was brought to a close on Saturday, leaving Caledonian at the top of the championship table with an unbeaten record. The teams are now in the t olio whig positions :

Games during the round were very even indeed, and between the first four learns the margins were seldom more than one goal in their respective ma I dies, while the fifth team also came out with some very close scores.

Saturday's game between Caledonian and'Defeuee was fast throughout, though rather scratchy towards the close. Caledonian exhibited splendid team work in the. first spell, the forwards and halves combining well together, quickly changing the scene of play and frequently catching Defence out ol position by such tactics. Slade was the most polished forward on the field, though he frequently gave slicks when taking the ball on the end of his. stick. He scored all four goals for his side. McLean worked well with him. and was the best of the remaining forwards. Lowe played effectively among a sound half line, and Miller was the better of the full backs. Defence played a hard game, depending mainly on ■ speed and hard hilling, frequently' getting to' the Caledonian circle, particularly in Hie second spell, when they combined to better eliect; Nicol again did most of the work among the forwards, with Coker showing much improvement and being the best of the others; Coker sent in a splendid centre from which Nicol scored Defence's only goal. D. Green was a much improved player in the halves, and. with Marshall, was the most effective in this line. The Scholium brothers made a sound pair ot backs, with Clem playing a very steady game. All scores were secured in the first half. Caledonian quickly piled up four goals. Defence scoring just before haJtlime. Neither goal was much endangered in the second spell, although Wilson saved an almost certain score from Slade, snapping the ball away smartly from the goalmouth. The two Y.M.C.A. teams met on the High School ground, the A's winning by five goals to two. The goals for the A team were secured by K. Harrison two, and B. Harrison, K. Nicol and Grot hers one each. Stichbury scored both for the 1* team. THE LADIES I

Y.M.P. showed better combination in beating Takitimu by four goals to nil, but the game was more even than the scores indicate. Most players displayed good stick work, and showed promise of even better performances as the season progresses. Alisses Swan and Kapuroa made a sound pair of backs for Y.M.P., while Miss Smith was a splendid half. Miss J. Toroa was the best of the forwards, and made most of the openings. On the Takitimu side, Alisses O. Baker and M. Pere worked to best advantage. with Miss Gillett a good centre half.

SCHOOLBOYS' COMPETITION The first match in the schoolboys' competition was played on Saturday morning. Rather short notice was given, with the result that one of the teams did not put in an appearance, and another played three short. Turanganui, with only eight players, practically all in their, first year at hockey, performed well against the more experienced Rovers team, which won by five goals to nil. Roderick, in the forwards, was the outstanding player on the field, and was far above the ordinary schoolboy class. He scored three of the goals for Rovers, and Dempscy goaled twice.
