OLDEST HOLDER OF CROSS
BRITISH SOLDIER HERO COLONEL MARLING DEAD (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9.30 a.m. . RUGBY, May 30. The death occurred at his Glouccs lershire home this morning of Colonel Sir Pcrcival Marling, aged 75. He was the. holder of the Victoria Cross, winch he won as a lieutenant for rescuing :■ private soldier under heavy lire at I'amanib in the Sudan 52 years ago.
Educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, the late Sir Pcrcival Marling received a commission in the 60th Rifles in 1880 and almost immediately saw service in the first Boer War. His extensive, service in Egypt between 1882 and 1886 included .participation in the Khartoum expedition, as a result of which he was promoted to the rank of major. In 1899 he again went to South Africa, taking part in the defence of Ladysmith and emerging from the campaign with many decorations. He Was stationed in South Africa until 1910. In the early days of the Great War he was on headquarters staff in France.
