GISBORNE CLUB GOOD ATTENDANCE ' Although tlic weather was very boisterous on Saturday night, a good muster attended at the Gisbornc Chess Club, which is nice and cosy since the heater was installed. Two old members, Messrs. Whitehead and .Jensen, attended for the first time this season and received a warm welcome, although they discovered their absence had not improved their game. Onlv two games were placed on the ladder owing" to the absence of several players. The big surprise was the defeat of Smythe by Aitkon, jnn., in the tournament. Following tire the results:—

Championship Ladder. Thompson beat Rhodes; Powell beat Aitken, sen. Sealed Handicap Tournament. — Rhodes beat ' llalbert, Smythe, and Somervell; McMahon beat: Robinson and llalbert; Meredith beat Lawn and McMahon; Smythe beat Fischbach; Aitken, jun., beat Smythe; Robinson beat Lawn; Aitken, sen., beat llalbert; Fischbach beat Aitken, jun., F. T. Venning beat Smythe.

The club invites learners as well as chess players to come along on Thursday and Saturday nights, and help to give this good old game the boost it deserves,
