IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY COLLINS SCORNS COURT GAOL FOR 12 MONTHS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 27, 12 noon.) DUBLIN, May 2(5. As a sequel to the recent arrests of members of the Irish Republican Army, Patrick Collins was to-day charged before a military tribunal with membership of an illegal organisation and failing to account for his movements.
Collins refused to plead, not recognising the court. Mr. J. Georghegan, K.C., representing the Irish Free State, recalled the murders of Vice-Admiral Somerville on March 25 and the boy John Egan on April 27. He said that the police had ascertained enough to satisfy them that the murders had been organised and carried out by an organisation whose members were in unlawful possession of firearms.
Police Superintendent Diggin said that Collins had refused to answer when asked if he knew who shot Vice-Admiral Somerville Or John Egan,
Collins denied that he was a member of an unlawful association, the Republican Army. Collins was sentenced to gaol for 12 months. He was removed from the c.ourt shouting: “Up with the Republic! ’’
Five others were sentenced to periods in gaol ranging from three tb 12 months on one or both of the above charges.
