NGATAPA CREEK FLOODS
PREVENTION PROPOSALS WIHEOW-UEKAKINII WORK DISTRICT ENC INKER'S VIEW The Hooding problem in the Ngatapa Creek, which has been before the Cook County Council on several occasions recently, was again raised by a letter received by the council at todav’s meeting, from the dist net engineer’ Mr. O. G. Thornton. Mr. Thornton’s letter was as under:— *(] agree that this should be regnrdcd as an urgent work lor next season. As von are aware there was provided this season a vote t«> eiial.de the work lo be commenced, subject to a contribution of £.70 from your council, but with the exception of the- length ol one mile of Ngatapa Creek included in the Waipnon willow-clearing scheme, it has been impossible for our organisation to embrace the work .his season.
1 ‘ J hope, however, to make an early commencement next season. No doubt the Government’s policy will require that, to be undertaken a.s a standard work rather than as a relief work. “‘I would therefore suggest that vottr council renew the application ivlien the next year’s estimates are in preparation, and in the meantime your council should actively sponsor the work mill take steps to see that the way will be clear for the department to proceed through the various properties when the time conics.”
The chairman, Cr. Charles .Matthews, commented with satisfaction upon the attitude of the department towards tiiis work, and moved that the mailer of preparing the way for the work 1m left to himself, with the assistance of the clerk and engineer to the council. This proposal was uuaniniouslv agreed to.
