(Herald Correspondent.) A special meeting of the Wairoa Borough .Council was. held on Monday night to consider 'the tenders for the erection of extra water storage tanks. The Mayor stated that four tenders had been received and also that a telegram had come to hand from a Mr. Otterway to the effect thdt ■ his tender was on the way. He was of the opinion that in the interests'of the ratepayers the council should. endeavour .to obtain the figure of the tender. Crs.'» Gemmell, Archibald and Berry all expressed the opinion that as ’the'advertisement stated that the tenders must be in the council office" at noon on March 9 they must proceed with the ones that had arrived. On a motion being put to the council the latter course was adopted, The following were the tenders: Messrs Bellam and Murray, £5961 ; Mr. J. E. Ehnor, £5988; Messrs Tressider and'Huntley, £6285 7s; 'and Mr. D. Glengarry, £6348 6s 4d. After considerable discussion, Or. Brady moved that the tender of Messrs. Bellam and Murray be accepted. This was seconded -by Cr. Clark. ■ Cr. Archibald's amendment that the tender of Mr. Glengarry be accepted was lost, and the motion was carried. The successful tenderers have given an undertaking to the council that they will employ only local men, even to the foreman, if one is procurable. Only •registered unemployed will be engaged, so that the subsidy from the Unemployment Board can be obtained. This will accrue to the council.
