INNINGS MARGIN

AUSTRALIANS WIN TEST AFRICANS* COLLAPSE SEVEN WICKETS ADD 31 GRIMMETT DESTR UCTIVE (FJec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. March i, 11 a.m.) DURBAN, March 3. The Australians won the fifth cricket test by an innings and six runs.

Ideal weather favoured the concluding day's play. Before lunch, the South Africans, particularly Mitchell and Nourse, were batting soundly, and at the adjournment the score had been carried to 10ti for the loss of three wickets.

Defying the bowling changes and tho efforts of the spin bowlers to take advantage of worn patches on t'ho wicket, the South Africans made a fine stand and by lunch seemed certain to avert an innings defeat. McCormick, who resumed the attack, proved rather expensive, and O'Reilly was brought on, bowling Nourse with his third ball when the batsmau went for a big hit. Grimmett relieved McCabe, who had opened witli McCormick. Then Chipper/ield was given (he ball, but Mitchell and Viljoen kept together till lunch.

After the resumption the South Africans collapsed sensationally, seven wickets adding only .11 runs. Griinmett was the chief destructive agent, finishing with six wickets for 73 runs. Of the last six batsmen, five were caught by Richardson. Viljoen went out first ball after lunch. Grimmett was making the fullest use of the warn wicket, and the ball turned prodigiously. Harvey played forward to one from Grimmett and the batsman spooned it backwards to Richardson. Langton also was beaten by a big turn. Grimmett at this stage since lunch had bowled five overs, three maidens, for three wickets, and two runs.

Balaskas withstood three overs from Grimmett, and then presented a simple catch to Richardson. The latter got a hat-trick when he snapped up Vandermerwe 2ft. behind the wicket.

Mitchell alone appeared to fathom the attack, but as none of the tail-enders were able to withstand it Australia won by an innings. Details are:— SOUTH AFRICA ,
