THEFT BY GIRL CASHIER

OVER £SOO INVOLVED ADMISSION TO COURT OUTLAY ON FURNITURE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. On a charge of fraudulently omitting to account for or pay sums totalling £564 4s 4d to her employers, the Art Cabinet Company, Kathleen Hester Hesse, a cashier, "aged 22 1 years, appeared in tiie Magistrate's Court to-day and pleaded guilty. Isaac Gotleib, tho company manager, said the accused had been employed as a cashier since April of 1935 at 16s weekly. Her wage was increased to £1 at the end of the year. The accused admitted taking money when discrepancies were discovered. She said .-die had purchased furniture amounting to £7O or £BO. Before leaving the office she handed £l7 to witness and later £lll which she drew from her bank. The next day she sent £3.

Cross-examined, the witness said that the accused handled close to £IOOO monthly. A simple check between the receipt book and the cash book at the time of a discrepancy would have revealed it.

Detective Murray said that the accused stated she spent £274 12s on the purchase of furniture, a radio set, and the hire of a bach and a car. The accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail at £SO being allowed.
