KEEN DEMAND
ALL CLASSES OF WOOL RATES MAINTAINED SATISFACTORY SALE CHRISTCHURCH AUCTION (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Keen competition for practically all classes of wool were evident at the third Christchurch wool sale to-day. The sale was a most satisfactory one, rates ruling at recent auctions in the Dominion being more than maintained. The advance was in no way spectacular, and compared with the* last Christchurch sale in January represented from $d t.o Ad per lb., and a very satisfactory feature was that practically all classes of wool shared in the iirming.
A proportion of fleece wools was neglected at the January auction, but this class met with a steady demand to-day. The result was an almost complete clearance. There were few super wools of the class that featured at the second auction, and best prices consequently did not reach the January figures. The top price was IBd, as against 203 d at the. January sale. There was a full bench of buyers, but the attendance of farmers was smaller than usual,
HEAVY PURCHASES BY CONTINENT.
Continental representatives were the main operators. France, as at the January sale, secured a. big proportion of line wools. Germany was in the market, to an increased extent, and there was also some buying on Japanese account, although possibly not' to the extent that would have been the case had domestsic matters been normal in that country. Bradford bought in moderate quantities' iraly, and American competition was aISP less noticeable than at the previous sale.
Local mills bought much less than at the two first markets, although one buying house secured some of tho best lots offered. Local fellmongers competed briskly and more than tho usual quantity of piece lot? went their way.
Crossbred wool, which was not in much request at earlier sales, met with much more spirited competition, and maintained the improved values operating at northern auctions for this class.
Fine pieces, which met with a pronounced advance at the last sale, sold steadily at fully up to the best of recent rates.
A good deal of wool was excluded from the second auction, and as this was mostly of lower grades of the clips, there was a larger' percentage of pieces forward to-day. The top price of the sale was 18d, secured for six bales of Corriednle ewe wool of Mr. T. S. Ferguson VBlairlogie (Waiau) clip'. A New Zealand buyer secured this lot.
Passings represented from three to four per cent, of the catalogue, which comprised 2G,406 bales.
