CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
LABOUR PARTY OPPOSED STATEMENT BY MINISTER One of the principles of the policy of the New Zealand Labour Party is "Abolition of capital punishment and flogging." It has been a plank for years, hut has been forgotten by a great many people, for, since the advent of a Labour Government, public interest iias been fa cussed principally upon economic matters and proposals of more general and immediate interest. The Minister of Justice, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, gave a. clear indication of the position when he was questioned on the subject in Wellington. "What is the attitude of the present. Government?" asked the Minister. "I have been a member of the Labour Party almost since its inception in New Zealand. For all that time there has been a platform which is binding upon every member.
"One plank in the platform is 'Abolition of capital punishment and flogging.' That, is a fact. It always has been a plank. All members of the Labour Party are bound by it. That is all 1 can say. I do not know what is generally known or understood. The fact has neither gained nor lost anything because 1, as Minister of Justice, have said' it."
