SIGNS OF PROSPERITY

IN UNITED STATES BUSINESS MEN'S VIEWS SYDNEY, Jan. 13. Colonel Bertram Gale, a director of several large London companies, who arrived by the Monowai yesterday, in the course of a world tour, said that he had expected to find signs of depression on every hand in America, but, instead he found prosperity. He later attended a convention of American Chambers of Commerce at Honolulu, and found an optimistic tone throughout the proceedings. Similar views were expressed by Mr. S. W. Howard, a native of Virginia, who has resided in South Africa for more than 30 years, as manager of the Imperial Tobacco Company of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. He said that on his visit to America he had been surprised by .the optimism of the people, and the apparent prosperity of industry generally. In his native State, the cotton mills were working day and night, and other manufacturers appeared to be thriving. Accompanied by his wife, Mr. Howard is making a world t'w-. Fe will leave for South Africa by ttte Nestor on January 21.
