AUSTRALIAN TOURISTS
VISIT TO DOMINION OTRANTO NEXT MONTH T'he rising lide of prosperity is indicated 'by tin? increase in the tourist business, one of tin? most reliable gauges of public spending power. The liner Otranto, which is due at Auckland, on February H from Australia on a tourist cruise, is expected to be practically fully booked.
The vessel is the fourth tourist liner to visit Auckland this summer, and the visitors will make the usual inland trips to Rotorna, Waitomo, New Plymouth, tin? Chateau, and Napier. When the Oraina visited New Zealand at Christmas ace initiation presented a difficult problem, as at the popular resorts hotels were already fully 'booked, but there will be no difficulty when the Otranto arrives.
The vessel will leave Sydney next Wednesday, and after a call at Brisbane will reach Auckland at 4 p.m. on February 5, leaving the following day for Wellington. " The Auckland district manager of the Government Tourist Department, Mr .1. W. Clarke, has left fo'r Sydney and will return on the Otranto.
"The popularity of tourist cruises is amazing," said Mr Clarke, when commenting on travel trends. "Moreover New Zealand has experienced an cxcelleiil tourist season in other respects. The regular liners have had exceptionally large passenger lists and although there were a certain number of cancolhitiqiis owing to the Wauganella being held up, most of her intending passsengeis came by oilier ships. Internal traffic, 100, has been vers- heavy."
There will also >be another visit by the Stratlmaver, which is due early in March with about 1000 passengers.
