It was. further reported that the seed heads had reached mutmrty much sooner than expected, and hi some of the lower paddocks the seed was beginning to loosen. A member of the Akaroa Cocksfoot Seedgrowers > Association said that the position was brought about mainly by a smaller number of experienced' men turning out than in past years. To acid to this difficulty the area .closed up for seed during the last two or three seasons had in creased u great deal. A further reason was that' the crop for this year promised to be the largest for several a season s. ' "The best men at present working iu the paddocks are receiving up to 2s fid an hqitr, but an inexperienced man cannot be expected to earn any more than half this amount," he continued. It is anticipated that the ,crop will yield 12,000 sacks, an increase of 3000 on last year. . ■. ( ■
