IMPROVED OUTLOOK
CONDITIONS IN SAMOA better copra prices (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. • The Samoan correspondent of the Press Association writes from Apia on December 19:— An improvement on last year’s trade for Christmas and .New Year will be brought about by the increased price paid for copra and the additional banana shipments to Auckland. With improved conditions in the latter half of the year, the outlook for 1936 is much more cheerful that it has been for the last few years. The increased output of bananas during 1936 will help considerably if copra and cocoa prices again slump. Most of the cocoa planters have planted out 25 acres or more of bananas to help meeting running costs, as. the present cocoa price, shows a very: sma margin of profit. Samoans are satisfied with the present local prices being paid for copra, and production has increased considerably. On the representations made through the administration by the Hons. A. G. Smyth and I. H. Carruthers the two elected members of the Legislative Council, the Hon. M. J. Savage, the/l nine Minister, has approved of the distribution of provisions for Christmas cheei to, unemployed. This act is gieatly appreciated by the recipients.
