Tin- many conjectures as to the nature of the object fouled by the patent anchor, of the Gisborne Lightering and Stevedoring Company’s tug Karoro at Tokoluarti' Bay just over six mouths ago were disposed oi' yesterday by tile suecesslid raising to the surface of the anchor and (be attached weight, which proved to be a large ship's anchor chain. The Karoro’s anchor became bailed when she was visiting IheConst port- to assist in the lightering of a Homo steamer on dune 12. In an endeavor to free the anchor, various methods laid been tried without success. Favored by a particularly calm sea yesterday, tile anchor and weight were'brought to the surface in 60 fathoms of water by the use of a treble tall purchase. hut it was only with considerable difficulty that the anchor could be treed from the chain. The cable, to which it is thought, a. heavy anchor is still aflached, was towed to a part- of Die bay clear of shipping and dumped there. The Ivanovo's anchor was in a well-preserved condition.
