Word has just been received from Fiji that the Rev. Leo. Lejeune, SIM. of Cawaci, Fiji, has entered the Makogai leper hospital as a patient. The news came as a great shock to the Marist mission, ts> which he has given distinguished service for over 30 years. Father Lejeune, who is 59 years of age, paid two visits to Auckland recently, on his way to and from Sydney. IFe i's the second member of the Marist Mission in Fiji to contract the disease during his missionary work. Three tons of explosive, worth £SOO were discharged at Smeed's Quarry, of the Waikato River above Tuakau, on Saturday, when, after three months of preparation, the giant charge displaced about 20,000 tons of rock. The quarry lias a face of 100 ft. high, and periodi cally huge blasts are used to bring dowr sufficient metal to feed the crushers for as long as a year. The stone brought down will last fo" about six months. A large quantity will be used for highway surfacing in the Rptorua district.
