RHODES SCHOLARS

THE 1935 SELECTIONS MESSRS. LEWIS AND D.WIN (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The selection committee under the chairmanship of the Governor-General, Lord Galway, to-day selected John Derek Lewis', E.A., of Auckland University College, and I). M. Davin, M.A., Otago University, as the two New Zealand Rhodes Scholars.

Mr. Lewis, whose age is 22 years, began his education at King's School, Remuera. At King's College he was first in his form from 1926 to 1928, and was du.\ of the college in 1930, besides winning various prizes. Passing on in the Auckland Univcrity College, he won a University National scholarship in 1932, and was also Maria BJacketi scholar and senior scholar in Greek, in term results he secured first-class passes in history, French, Latin and Greek. In degree examinations he was first for New Zealand in Latin in 1933 and in Greek in 1934. He took his B.A. degree this year. Mr. Lewis' athletic record began with the captaincy of the King's .School eleven in 1925. At King's College he was captain of the first eleven for three years. In the 1929-30 season he was captain of a combined secondary schools cricket team, and was captain of an Auckland junior representative team in 1931. In Rugby football lie was captain of the first fifteen both at King's School and at King's College, and has been in the University College senior A team. As an athlete he made an unbeaten record in the junior 440yds. combined secondary schools' -sports, and has represented the Auckland University in the 100yds. and 220yds. races, no'was one of the junior and senior doubles champions in tennis at King's College. Mr. Davin was born at Invercargill in 1913 and received his primary education at the Marisfc Brothers' School, obtaining dux honors in 1926. lie was also dux of the Marist Brothers' High School. In 1930 lie was engaged in post-matricu-lation work at the Sacred Heart, College and was the winner of a gold medal for Latin and of a, University National Scholarship awarded for excellence in history, Latin and English. Mr. Davin entered the University of Otago in 1931, and in the annual class results took first place in English and Latin and also won the Gilray Memorial Prize for English. In 1932 he was again fust in English and Latin and also in history. He completed his B.A. degree in 1933 and was senior scholar in Latin and George Young Scholar. In 1934 he tool; special lienors in English and graduated M.A. with first class honors, lie has been prominent in the administrative and athletic sides of (lie schools which he has attended. He was captain of the Marist Brothers' .'High School ai Invercargill in 1929. During his association with the university, he was connected in official capacities with the Aits Faculty Students' Association, the Debating Society. and the Literary and Dramatic Society. In athletics Mr. Davin has had a- successful career. In 1929 he was long distance running and broad jump champion of the Marist High School and a mem her of the Rughy team. At the Sacred Heart College he took part in football and in running championships and, since entering the university, has been a member of the E, D„ and■ O- Rughy teams in successive years. lie has also been actively interested in lawn tennis, swimming and shooting.
