FLIGHT TO AUSTRALIA
"SMITHY'S" RECORD BID STILL BEHIND SCOTT OTHERS PASS RANGOON (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Nov. 8, noon.) CALCUTTA, Nov. 7. Four well-known airmen are at present winging their way towards Australia, the chief interest centring in Sir Charles Kingsfoid Smith's attempt to lower the record for a flight from England.. "Smithy," who left England at 6.27 a.m. yesterday, passed over Karachi at 7.35 a.m.to-day en route to Allahabad, where he landed at 5.25 p.m. local time. He was then 2hrs. 47min. behind Mr. C. W. Scott's time. He had refreshments and a wash at Allahabad, and stated that nothing uutowards had occurred since he left Bagdad. Exactly an hour after landingi he left again for Singapore, and passed over Calcutta at 9.6 p.m. _
In the meantime, Mr. James Melrose and Mr. H. F. Broadbent continue their neck-and-neck race. Mr. Broadbent is at present slightly ahead, having left Rangoon this morning for Singapore. Mr. Melrose reached Calcutta at 6.30 a.m., departed two hours later for Rangoon, where be arrived safely and later took off for Alor Star. The fourth plane is a Polish one piloted by Major Karpinski, accompanied by M. Rogalski, who is flying from Warsaw to Melbourne. They arrived at Rangoon yesterday, and this morning took off for Bangkok. CAPE TO LONDON LLEWELLYN'S PROGRESS (British Official Wireless.) Recr. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 6. Flying Officer David Llewellyn and Miss'Jill Wyndham, who are attempting to lower the record for the flight from the Cape of Good Hope to England, arrived at Broken Hill early to-day and left soon after for Abercorn.
