YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB

THIRD, MEETING

talk ox sheep, dipping

The third meeting' of the Poverty Bay Young Farmers' t.’lub was held this week at the offices of the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association, kindly lent- for the occasion by Mr W. E. Chamberlain, There was a fair attendance and three new members were enrolled.

The speaker for the evening; was the chairman, Mr J. E. Duncan, who gave an interesting address on sheep dips and dipping.--This dealt- comprehensively with all aspects of the subject, including the parasites concerned, sheep dipping materials, various types of clipping baths with their advantages and disadvantages, and the acutal operation of dipping, together with a brief review of the various causes of losses at- dipping time and how to prevent them. Some'general'business was dealt with and it was decided to hold a field clay on Saturday, September 28, to take the form of a demonstration on Jersey cattle, at the property of Mr J. T. Herbert, Busbmere. After some discussion, 1 p.m. was fixed as the time which would be most suitable. It- was also decided to hold the next evening meeting at the A. and P. offices on the first Wednesday of next- month. In the meantime members have undertaken to prepare short papers on the subject of pumpkins, marrows and their closely related varieties. As this is a subject of topical interest in this district it is hoped to deal with all aspects of it and that a lively debate will result. .Mr Bates, the local* agricultural instructor, has offered to donate a prize for the best paper on the subject. ft is also probable that in (he near future a number of members will be taking part in a mangel growing trial sponsored by one of the local produce firms, but arrangements have not yet been finalised.
