England won the toss, and elected to bat, making 357 in the first strike, and at the drawing of stumps for the day,, the tourists'had scored three runs without loss.

Siodlc and Tomlinson were dropped from the .South African team. Williams is twelfth man. Siedle has strained a knee, and Balaskas has injured .an arm. Five, of the South Africans suffered from slight food poisoning after eating lobster, but recovered.
